What actually are sulphates?
Sulphates (like Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and Sodium Laureth Sulphate) are cleaning agents, or surfactants, designed to lift away dirt, oil, and product build-up. They’re the reason your shampoo gets that rich, bubbly lather – and they’ve long been praised for that 'squeaky clean' feeling.
But here’s the thing: sulphates don’t know when to stop.
Yes, they strip away the build-up. But they also strip away your hair’s natural oils – the ones that keep your scalp balanced and your strands strong. That over-cleansing can leave you with brittle hair, damaged ends, and dull hair that feels rougher with every wash. And ironically, when your scalp senses it’s been stripped bare, it can produce more oil, leaving you stuck in a cycle of greasy hair and constant washing.
So, why go sulphate-free?
If you’ve ever walked out of the salon with freshly coloured hair and watched it fade after just a few washes – sulphates might be to blame. If your curls feel weighed down, or your fine hair lacks life, they’re probably not helping either.
Switching to a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner is like hitting reset. You're giving your hair the chance to rebalance, rebuild, and finally behave.
You might notice your hair holds onto colour longer. That colour treated hair doesn’t dull so fast. You may start seeing less breakage, more volume, and even a little extra bounce on the days it usually falls flat. It’s not magic – it’s just giving your hair the chance to thrive without harsh ingredients getting in the way.
